Ukraine False Flag Emails: Real or Fake?

Brandon Turbeville
Activist Post

In another example of how difficult it is now becoming to determine the authenticity of “leaked” information, individuals claiming to be associated with the hacking group Anonymous are claiming that they have uncovered an email that shows communication between U.S. Army Attaché Assistant in Kiev, Jason Gresh, and Igor Protsyk, a high ranking official from the Ukranian General Staff. These individuals claim the emails show that there are plans to conduct a number of attacks on Ukrainian military bases in order to destabilize the situation on the ground inside the country.

If accurate, one such plan involves “causing problems to the transport hubs in the south-east of Ukraine in order to frame-up the neighbor” a quote allegedly attributed to Gresh. The emails allegedly involve Gresh stating that such an attack will “create favorable conditions for the Pentagon to act.”

The unconfirmed group also claims that Protsyk writes to an individual identified as Vasil in another communication where he tells the man to arrange an attack on a Ukrainian Air Force Base housing the 25 Aviation Brigade in Melitopol.

Vasil is apparently responsible for arranging the nuts and bolts of the attack, gathering gunmen, and providing them with maps and locations of sites to be attacked, according to the group and the emails it claims to have hacked.

While some chatter has taken place across the Internet in regards to this story, it has not yet been confirmed by this writer, Activist Post, or, to my knowledge, any other media organization as legitimate.

Unfortunately, with leaks of this nature, it is virtually impossible to confirm the veracity of the claims made therein, particularly within a short timeframe.

It should be noted that, although there is a LinkedIn profile page of a Jason Gresh listing employment as the U.S. Military Attaché to the U.S. Embassy in Ukraine, Gresh is not listed on the U.S. Embassy website, nor is the position. However, Gresh did in fact work for the U.S Embassy in 2008 and in 2013.

The alleged emails state:
Events are moving rapidly in Crimea. Our friends in Washington expect more decisive actions from your network.
I think it’s time to implement the plan we discussed lately. Your job is to cause some problems to the transport hubs in the south-east in order to frame-up the neighbor.
It will create favorable conditions for Pentagon and the Company to act.
Do not waste time, my friend.

Respectfully,
JP

Keep in mind that, while such a false flag attack is well within the realm of possibility, a large amount of disinformation is often circulated via the Internet during moments of crisis. Many of these elements of disinformation are often deliberately released in order to poison the well of good journalism with stories that seem legitimate but, in fact, are not. This method discredits the reporter and the outfit that reporter is associated with.

It is also quite possible that documents are intentionally doctored as a preventative measure to mitigate the fallout in case that document ever gets out.

It is important to remember that, in January 2013, emails obtained from a German hacker were sent to Cyber War News, that reportedly showed the defense contractor Britam Defense preparing to stage a false flag chemical weapons attack to be blamed on Assad. British News Agencies reported the scandal and many other outlets reported it as well.

In the end, however, Britam sued the Daily Mail over the story and, as a result, many smaller media organizations retracted or removed entirely their reports over the story in order to avoid suit because the emails had been tampered with, time stamps had been changed, and headers were missing. Britam claimed this was evidence that the emails were not authentic.

Although many continue to believe that the Britam emails were indeed legitimate but preventatively altered, history can only acknowledge them as fakes, since retractions necessarily followed.

Fake or not, the Britam email story is but one example of the treacherous pitfalls facing real journalism in the digital world, particularly in a world in which governments and corporations are more secretive than ever before.

With this in mind, it is important not to jump to conclusions as to the veracity of these emails allegedly coming from the U.S. Assistant Military Attaché or their relevance.

At this moment, they remain a development to watch - not a cause for panic.
