Parity Agriculture Is The Answer To The Farming Crisis

The United States is in the midst of an existential farm crisis. From the wholesale disappearance of the family farm, overproduction, and industrial scale farming to depleted farm land, corporate control of farms, and the unsustainability of the subsidy culture, America’s “amber waves of grain” are threatening to become the deadened brown husks of an entire way of life.

But farming is not the only crisis to come from the failure to practice sustainability and harvest healthy food. An environmental, economic, and human health crisis is approaching the United States unlike the country has ever seen. One of the fattest, sickest nations on earth, our country spends more than any other nation on healthcare. The majority of this spending is aimed at chronic health issues yet the country is becoming fatter and sicker with each passing year. The United States cannot sustain such expenditures.

In addition, aggressive farming has reduced natural habitat, depleted the soil, and set the United States in motion to face a crisis in which the soil itself is no longer able to render crops at all.

Farming is, by nature, an up and down game, with many variables going into the production of food that can drive both prices and production. Throughout American and, indeed, world history, agriculture has been susceptible to the climate, weather, human action, war, and economic policy. Even bumper crops producing high volumes of extra product can be detrimental by lowering the prices received for them. But, for all history, one thing has remained constant: the fact that human society totally depends on the ability of farmers to produce food. It is quite a simple realization but a powerful one. The death of the farmer is the death of humanity as a whole.

In the United States, since the early 1900s, the entire country has experience various farm crises – some as a result of weather and climate disasters but mostly as a result of governmental policy, i.e. the inability of the U.S. government to ensure that farmers actually have an incentive to produce food.

Declining Family Dinners Pose A Choice: Communitarianism or Make Wall Street Pay

In her article “Study Proposes Outrageous Solution In Lieu of Family Dinners,” Heather Callaghan of Activist Post describes, as the title suggests, one of the many ludicrous “solutions” being presented to combat the inability of families to provide for themselves and maintain a normal family life – government-sponsored, communal family dinners.

Callaghan’s article refers to a study, supported by a grant from the USDA National Institute of Food and Agriculture called the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative and published in Contexts. The study was tasked with exploring the relationship and gap presented in popular culture and the realities that people live with when it comes to feeding their children. Callaghan writes that, “The researchers interviewed 150 females in families with children between the ages of 2 and 8, as well as conducting observations of 12 of these families for a total of 250 hours.”

The results of the findings produced the kind of results that only academics would require money to determine. Dr. Sinnikka Elliott stated that “We found that middle-class, working-class, and poor families faced some similar challenges. For example, mothers from all backgrounds reported difficulty in finding time to prepare meals that everyone in the family would be willing to eat.”

Callaghan summarizes the results of the study by writing,

In addition, middle-class mothers reported being torn between their desire to spend quality time with their children and the expectation that they needed to provide the children with a home-cooked meal. Middle-class mothers were concerned that they weren't able to give their kids the best possible meals because they couldn't afford to buy all organic foods.

James Hinton: Napa Valley's anti-GMO candidate

After years of leading the charge against genetically modified (GM) food, California now has its own anti-GMO/pro-organic political candidate. James Hinton, an independent running for California’s U.S. House District 5, has come out strong against the proliferation of GM food in the U.S. food supply as well as in the environment. Hinton has also taken a strong stand in favor of GMO labeling.

Hinton has received an impressive amount of support already, despite running against an opponent who is a career politician with a sizable campaign purse. Hinton has amassed endorsements from a variety of organizations from the NRA to the Tax Wall Street Party, but, even more important, he has received the endorsement of California voters.

Hinton has already survived the California primary and received enough votes to be the only candidate facing Democrat Mike Thompson in the general election. There have been anti-GMO candidates in the past — in California and elsewhere — but Hinton’s campaign appears to be the most promising.

While Hinton would prefer to see a world free of GMOs, he is also aware of the practical limitations to that goal in the current political climate. This is why Hinton has stated his full support behind labeling efforts.
