The pacific tsunami warning center has just issued a tsunami warning for the Solomon Islands, Papua New Guinea and Vanuata after a 7.6 magnitude earthquake struck the Solomon Islands earlier today.

The earthquake took place around 7:15am local time and the epicenter was located about 62 miles southeast of Kirakira, Solomon Islands. The depth of the earthquake was estimated to be approximately 18.2 miles.

Original reports set the magnitude of the quake at 8.3 before subsequent reports revised it downward. There were initial warnings of possible tsunamis for New Zealand; however, those warnings have now been cancelled. Still, there are risks of both stronger and unusual currents along the New Zealand coast. It is not known whether there are any injuries as a result of the Solomon Islands quake.

This earthquake is now one of a string of many earthquakes that have taken place over the last few weeks in addition to the awakening and eruption of several volcanoes.

This chain of events has led many to speculate that there may perhaps be some type of increase in geological and seismological activity that could precipitate a catastrophic event. Others, however, maintain that these occurrences can be attributed to natural causes.
