In an easily predictable move, Illinois Governor Pat Quinn has recently proposed a plan to ban what he calls “assault” weapons in his state.
Quinn is using his amendatory veto power as Governor to make changes to a
bill dealing with ammunition sales and add language that would prohibit
the sale, manufacture, purchase, and possession of “semi-automatic
assault weapons and attachments.”
Now that Quinn has made his changes to the bill, Illinois lawmakers will have to make the choice
as to whether they will accept the amended version or reject it. They
could also simply not call a vote on the legislation and allow it to
The bill, with new language added by Quinn, also specifically bans the AK-47, AR-15, and TEC-9.
Saying that he believes the time for gun control is
now, Quinn is not backing down from his own assault on the second
“It’s very clear that these particular weapons are not designed to do anything but to have human targets,” Quinn stated.
The new language
inserted into the bill via Quinn is deeply disturbing for a number of
reasons – not the least of which being the basic violation of the
Constitutional right of Americans to keep and bear arms. Keep in mind,
the bill bans the very “possession” of so-called “assault” weapons. One
can only imagine where such a decree might lead in the climate of the
2012 police state that the United States has now become.
It should be noted that labeling semi-automatic guns as “assault
weapons” is nothing more than a propaganda tactic designed to cause fear
and trembling in the minds of those who know virtually nothing about
guns except for what they have heard being repeated from the mainstream
media. Indeed, “assault weapon” is a politically charged term used to
evoke specific emotions of fear in the listener; a tactic that,
unfortunately, has been used successfully in recent years.
It should also be pointed out that Pat Quinn is actually from Chicago, a city which already has stringent (and unconstitutional) gun laws. In addition, it has one of the highest crime rates in the nation.
Thus, if the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and
over again and expecting a different result, then Governor Quinn is
mentally incapable of holding his position any longer.
Nevertheless, Quinn’s ridiculous additions to the Illinois state
congressional legislation is just another move in the propaganda push
against the second amendment in the wake of the Colorado shooting which
itself increasingly points to being staged for just this purpose.
Although Pat Quinn’s statement about semi-automatic weapons, like Michael Bloomberg’s statement
regarding deer not wearing bulletproof vests, might sound convincing to
some, it is also an erroneous argument. The fact is that the second
amendment does grant the American people the right to own semi-automatic
weapons, as it was never included in the Constitution for the purpose
of deer hunting and skeet shooting – but for the defense of the people
against a tyrannical government among other threats to their liberty and
Pat Quinn is just one more politician in a long line who begins his
attack on gun ownership with the stock statement of “I respect the
second amendment but . . .”
Unfortunately for Quinn and the rest of his ilk, his respect or lack
thereof for the second amendment is irrelevant as this right is not up
for debate. It is high time the American people begin to remind their
politicians of this fact.
