What Just Happened In Niger? - Details, Analysis, And Solutions

Brandon Turbeville
September 5, 2023

On July 26, 2023, Niger's President, Mohamed Bazoum was overthrown in a coup. Presidential Guard Commander General Abdourahamane Tchiani subsequently proclaimed himself leader of the new military-led government. Immediately after Bazoum was removed from office, Tchiani's government closed the borders, declared a curfew, and suspended operations of various state institutions. For a country that scarcely makes the news at any time, Niger was suddenly front and center, revealing the true nature of its importance, at least in terms of its significance, geographically speaking. The French stand to lose the most, as France has been rapidly losing influence in Africa over the last several years. Western interests, as they stand, appear to be on the losing end of the coup while Russia and Wagner Group appear to be poised to, at the very least, capitalize on it. The coup also threatens to draw the region of West Africa into a multi-national conflict.

To be clear, the events still currently unfolding on the ground in Niger are not yet fully clear. While mainstream media outlets are trying to point the finger at  Russia, the alternative media is attempting to  blame the United States. Both suggestions may have merit, as does the possibility that the coup was simply a result of government mismanagement, corruption, and ineptitude, or at least the perception of it. It is also possible that the coup came as a result of internal squabbles between government members. Regardless, before knee-jerk reactions and embedded positions cloud judgement, the events in Niger must be examined closely.

The Initial Events

On July 26, 2023, Niger's Presidency tweeted that the Presidential Guards, commanded by General Abdourahamane Tchiani was engaging in an "anti-Republican demonstration." It noted that Tchiani's forces were unable to obtain the support of other security forces. It stated that the President (Barzoum) was well, since reports had emerged that he was being held inside the Presidential Palace in Niamey.

The latest country in Africa to approve GMO cultivation has recently announced its plan to begin cultivating both Bt Cotton and “biotech maize.” Ethiopia is approving the new genetically modified crop as growing expansion of GMOs threatens to overtake the African continent in what can only be described as Western corporate imperialism.

According to the International Service For The Acquisition Of Agri-Biotech Applications,

The Government of Ethiopia is the latest African country to authorize cultivation of biotech crops by granting two landmark approvals for environmental release of Bt cottonand research trials on biotech maize. In a letter signed by the Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change H.E. Gamado Dale to the Ethiopian Institute of Agricultural Research (Applicant), the country will start with two Bt cotton hybrids: JKCH1050 and JKCH1947. The release for Bt cotton is based on experts' analysis of the results from two-season confined field trials conducted under the supervision of the Biosafety Affairs Directorate of Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate change and Biosafety technical working team drown from different institutions that have evaluated the final report submitted by the applicant. The Ethiopian government has identified cotton as a strategically important commodity crop to supply raw material for the rapidly growing textile sector and to generate thousands of jobs along the cotton sub-sector value chain.

On maize, the research institute will commence confined field trials of an event with stacked traits for drought tolerance and insect resistance in partnership with the African Agricultural Technology Foundation. The research permit is for five years.

Pygmies Of Cameroon Tortured And Expelled For Rothschild Elephant Hunting Scheme

According to a number of media outlets, international banker Benjamin de Rothschild is expelling Baka pygmies from their land in Cameroon in an effort for his company to operate an elephant hunting safari in the area.

Not only has Rothschild expelled the Pygmies, but he has also led an effort to beat and torture them in the process. Survival International, an indigenous advocacy group, published statements in early November from the alleged victims of Rothschild and his business.

“They beat us, they searched for us, they set their dogs on you, their guns on you,” said one member of the Baka who also claimed that his fields were burned.

Another man stated, “They told me to carry my father on my back. I started walking, (the guard) beat me, he beat my father. For three hours, every time I would cry out they would beat me, until I fainted and fell to the ground with my father.”

According to teleSUR, the Baka are not allowed to hunt, visit religious sites or collect plants on their own land as it is now occupied by Rothschild’s tourist camps.

Rothschild’s company has, according to teleSUR at least two protected ancestral plots and uses the land to allow wealthy tourists to hunt wild animals at $50,000 per hunt.

Interestingly enough, the World Wildlife Fund which claims it has a major presence in Cameroon in order to combat trophy hunting, has not responded to Survival International.

This is not surprising since the World Wildlife Fund is supported by the Rockefeller family and a host of oligarchical families and major corporations. It is, in a sense, an organization of stealth designed to parade about as a pro-environment, pro-animalorganization but in reality, is a tool of the 1% to gain control of wildlife and wildlife refuges for the benefit of international banks and corporations.

According to a report by Nigerian Watch, a UK-based magazine for Nigerian communities, hundreds of US Marines are now being stationed in Ghana as the Nigerian elections begin to take place.

The Marines are allegedly being stationed in Ghana so as to be available to remove American personnel from Nigeria if the elections result in violence, a possibility that some analysts are expecting.

Nigerian Watch reports that “that there may be post-election violence, especially after the results are announced as neither the ruling People's Democratic Party (PDP) or the opposition All Progressives Congress (APC) is likely to accept defeat.”

Nigerian Watch reported that one of its sources has claimed that two Hercules C-130 airplanes touched down at Kotoka Airport a week ago and carried three helicopters inside.

The source also allegedly stated that “There are well over 200 marines and they are camped at the airport. The helicopters are believed to be meant for the quick evacuation of Americans in Nigeria in the event of violence."
