An Angel In Damascus

I met an angel in Damascus today. A beautiful young lady, 20 years old...my son's age, with golden hair and huge blue eyes. A Greek, born and raised in Syria. Enjoying a rare treat of going to a cafe after celebrating Palm Sunday in church.

She was shot three times by US backed "moderate rebels". They kidnapped her friend. They were on their way to school.

And she looked at me with those eyes and from her pure heart asked, "Why do Americans hate us? We love everyone. We love peace."

Had to take a deep breath then to hold back tears. When I told her Americans don't hate the Syrian people...that we are mostly people of good will...but we have been lied to...that Americans are led to believe we are helping Syrians.

And then she said, "but they are helping the ones killing us." And all I can say is, "I know."

We spoke about life before the war. All the hopes and dreams. Now, they only live day to day, trying to survive and make enough to eat.

Then I asked her if she is considering leaving...with her Greek passport she would be welcomed anywhere... and what she thinks of President Assad.

She spoke of her love and respect for him and how courageous he and his family have been to stay in Syria. As long as he stays, the angel says, she will too.

I hope so. Syria needs all her angels.
